During my 2011 visit to Sicily I made it a point to visit the Capo Market in Palermo. It is an amazing sight, and filled with sounds of market vendors selling their items: artichokes, cuttlefish, fruit, and assorted locally grown vegetables. Palermo reminded me so very much of my grandparents and, while strolling one of the many streets in the Capo market I ran in to this gentleman who (I don’t know why) really reminded me of my “grandpa.” I tapped his shoulder and asked permission to capture his photo – he nodded yes. This is my very favorite photo – ah! memories!
My “grandpa” would cook fresh calamari purchased from the local Cleveland fish market; he passed the recipe on to my dad.
On one of my daily excursions I was pleasantly surprised to see a tour bus with the “Ciulla family” name. Little did I know until many days later when a local informed me the name CIULLA in Sicily is very much like SMITH in America – lots and lots of Ciulla’s in Sicily!
